26 TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS RUN 1,000 MILES TO DELIVER $50,000 TO THOSE IMPACTED BY BOSTON BOMBING

In 1836, Davy Crockett and 65 other TN men signed “an oath as volunteers” to defend and support their brothers and sisters in TX at the Alamo.  They traveled nearly 1000 miles to extend that “volunteer” support in person at the Alamo.

Now, 177 years later, 26 TN men and women and signed another “oath as volunteers” to support their brothers and sisters in Boston after the recent, tragic Boston Marathon bombing with a plan of traveling over 1000 miles to extend that same tradition of TN “volunteer” support in person . . . raising money along the way to help those victims impacted by the bombing on April 15, 2013.  A Tennessee tradition as “volunteers” to serve our fellow U.S. citizens in their time of need.

The VOLUNTEER spirit is alive and well in SE TN as these runners have committed to an epic 8-day relay run from Cleveland, TN. to Boston, MA. departing on April 12, 2014 and arriving on April 20, 2014 the day before the next Boston Marathon appropriately held annually on Patriots Day.  These runners will run non-stop, 24 hours a day through 8 states and over 1000 miles, hitting large metropolitan areas like; Knoxville, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.  They will also travel through small communities along the course, with the official halfway point being Madison, VA., population 210. They will be traveling through the city of Bridgeport on April 18. The adventure is a draw, but more importantly it is a platform in which to raise awareness about the on-going issues those victims continue to face and an opportunity to raise funds to support those victims and the people of Boston.

It all started with a small 5K Fun Run organized by a local group of avid runners (self-named the Half Warriors for their commitment to participating in 1/2 marathons) shortly after the Boston Marathon bombing with a goal of sending a little money to support the families in need.  The goal for that event was $500, but a large crowd turned out and donations were nearly $2,000.  In a conversation between planners of this event emboldened by the success, somebody jokingly mentioned, “You know what would be really cool?  If we RAN this to Boston and handed the check to them personally!”  They ultimately mailed that check, but an idea was born.  An ambitious idea to take an epic 1000+ mile run from Cleveland, TN. to Boston, MA. in an effort to raise more funds for those in Boston.

The team has selected two partner charities where 100% of all funds raised will go (each of the 26 participants will pay their own expenses and sponsors have covered the additional needs), the One Step Ahead Foundation (add website here) which has committed serving the children who have suffered amputations because of the Boston Marathon bombing and Dream Big! (add website here), a Boston-based nonprofit serving underprivileged girls through sports . . . sports and running being the driving force behind the entire project.

The team of TN Volunteers/Half Warriors has received sponsorship’s that will cover much of the travel costs and they have committed to cover the rest of the costs on their own to allow 100% of donations to go to their partner charities.  Don Ledford Chevrolet of Cleveland is donating vehicles for the trip, Panera Food is providing meals for the runners along the course, Cooke’s Food Store is providing snacks for the runners, Holiday Inn Express is providing a launch site and pre-event party as well as connections to other Holiday Inn Expresses along the route for housing needs.  A documentary team has already been following the team in an effort to record this adventure.
